Ok Winter's hear and it's raining cats and dogs outside (always does in
South Wales anyway ;O) and I've got a water leak problem.
There's a leak on the passenger side just inside the door apparently beneath
the parcel shelf. I've fitted new door seals, the windscreen seal has been
refitted with sealant and my 90' Mainstream Cooper has had new wings,
scuttle panel, inner and outer sills and A' panels so where is the water
getting in from.
Any help appreciated,
Cheers,
Taffy

Hi, Taff,
You could try looking behind the dash trim where the eyeball ventilators
come through the metal panel from below the wing. It is common for the metal
to rust away in this area and the wheels then throw water through the holes.

While you're at it, check the heater ventilation opening just below
that as well ...
If you'd like to check for where exactly the water's making it in, get
someone to spray the underside of the car and the wheel housing with a
garden hose (or whatever else is available ;)). You should then be able
to easily track the leak on the inside ...
I've also seen leakages due to dented undersides caused by
inconsiderate/unknowing mechanics by jacking up a mini using the wrong
places.

Well the eyeball vents were repaired when the wings got replaced, but the
water is running down from the dashboard rail. Anyway it's going in to the
bodyshop to get the roof sorted next week, so i'll get them to check it out
I think.

Sounds like the check strap seal to me, Taffy.

Mine has the same problem, I think it's because I "forgot" to but the
plastic liners back inside the doors after I rebuilt the car.
If you take the door card off, you should see some polythene sheet between
window (if wound down) and the inner side of the door. This prevents the
water that gets past the outer window seal dripping straight down to the
bottom of the inner part of the door, which then consequently runs behind
the door card, fills the seal, and then runs down the inner sill behind the
carpet and sits quite happily underneath.
Then, in true Mini style, it just sits back and rusts. Yippee.

Get a hose on it Taffy, and get someone inside to see where the water is
coming from.
Removing the carpets, and putting Talc on the edges of the floor can isolate
a leak.
Remember to spray the hose under the wheel arches as well.
And don't overlook new seals, there may well still be a problem.
