Who makes the modified head for the Twin point injection?
Given that this engine can only produce about 80 bhp with the standard ecu
and no overfueling. Is a stage 2 head good enough? what constitutes a stage
2? Ported only? larger inlet valves? Or is stage 3 with bigger inlet valves
and stage 4 bigger inlet and bigger exhaust? Confusing.
I intend to fit 1.5 ratio roller tip rockers and I already have stainless
steel single box rear section and piper cross replacement air filter (not
just the element).
Lots of people will sell you one but which one is best in terms of getting
80 bhp? Obviously I could go for the biggest valves and highest compression
and still only get 80 bhp? So where is the optimum?
If I speak to Janspeed/John Cooper Gar., minisport, minispares, minispeed,
honeycrock, longman, swift......etc etc..... they are going to say get
theirs arent they? ....and I am sure they will give good power output.
Who has spent about ?350 to ?500 on a head with the other aforementioned
mods (GSI as keith Calver describes in his articles) and dynoed their engine
at about 80-85 bhp?
Cheers

Nice easy question (Not) Whats the best mods to carry out on the
MPi??
Answer:
Stick a stage one on it and leave it at that until some sorts out
the issue with the ecu. You may read in the mags that the GSI kit
is about the maximum the current ecu can take.
(Got to be careful now) I dont think that the ecu works well with
the GSI kits (stage 3). I think (and possibly others on this board
too) that the fueling is not quite what it should be. And therefore
with the amount of extra ?? to go from stage 1 to stage three is
possibly not worth it at the moment.
So in short put a stage 1 kit on the mpi and then wait for a company
to make the stage 3 work correctly with twin throttle bodies :-)

I had my S style kit done and fitted by MED in Leicester and am most happy
with it, but you dont notice a hell a lot of difference at first until the
comp gets its head around it and re-sets itself, the the improvement is
mainly in the form of better touque, which is awesome in the MPI to begin
with. I now have my car back in New Zealand which is really just one long
mountain range and its fabulous, but pre conversion Lis and I did the
Italian Job and she struggled with the Swiss Alps etc. So i guess what Im
saying is that the real imporvement is in hill climbing and long open road
streches were she breathes better and is much smother. Only niggle would be
that the 1.5 ration roller tips are a bit noisey, but once the revs come up
they don settle down

What spec is the head?
Did you have it dynoed, if so how much BHP?
Does it have any type of modified fueling?
Cheers

the head was the standard off the shelf MED conversion that they advertise
in Mini World etc.
There was no changes made to the fueling etc of the car. The enginemangement
system is self adjusting and will handle it all.
I didnt have it dynoed pre fitting so it would have just been the standard
Rover Cooper specs, but I have had it on a rolling road since and it
registered a very respctable 155ft lbs of tourque and peaked at 85bhp in
third, with the "supertouring" gearbox and 13inche wheels in dropped off in
4th to about 65bhp at the wheels, which Im told would be consitent with a
loss of around 18-20% once its been through the gearbox and final drive.
Im waiting till the Wellington Club has a dyno day at their local specialist
tuners because he has a dyno hub system which is much more accurate and will
produce a verifiable computer diagnostic as well. Im also now running her on
98 octane unleaded fuel and this in its self is providing much better
performance and overall economy

Is this the road rocket or the phase 3 head?

Okey dokey, I'm actually hankering for one too! - I missed the last one as
I was hung over, and that was about a year and a half ago now. I think
we're about due. I will raise it at comittee night tonight.
