Last night I was heading off into town to see some friends and decided to
take the Mini as I haven't had a chance to drive it for a couple of weeks.
Parking up in a side street, a middle aged gentleman walks up to me and asks
if I'm a member of a local Mini club.  A 5 minute conversation ensues and it
turns out he's restoring a 1275GT.  I didn't have my Mini clubs details to
hand but took his e-mail address with a promise to send them on when I get
home (which I did).

That just doesn't happen with my other cars! :-)

It happens with Morris Minors and with my old BMW bike too, and recently
I found a Mazda MX5 for a friend to buy; the local MX5 club looks just
like a slightly older, slightly more affluent version of a Mini club, or
alternatively, just like the BMW motorcycle club, but with far more
women!

Yeah, it's the 'I learned to drive in one of those' or 'that was my first
car' syndrome! Happens with Minors, Ford Populars, A35's, Just about any car
that was popular in it's day. If you were to park in the High Street in a
Ferrari it is more likely to get vandalised than talked about!

My other car is a 1966 VW Beetle, and you can barely go anywhere
without someone coming up to you and asking questions!

Looking foward when I can do the same in my Mini :-)

But how annoying is it when you go to a garage to get something done.  I
once needed new valves fitting to my alloys as the caps had seized.  I had
1/2 hour of "best car I ever had...blah blah...  It was a cooper s fully
rally prepared blah blah used to go three thousand miles an hour and use a
cup of petrol every four years blah blah".  Then after 1/2 an hour "sorry, I
can't do it".

Funny thing is these people all drive Ford Mundanos now.......
