Hi,

My father has come into ownership of a Morris Mini Minor Saloon.

We have a certificate from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust that
gives the following information:

Car/Chassis number: M-A2S4/1058

Engine Number: 8MB-U-H/1296

Body Number: 1060

Date of despatch: 9, September 1959

We have been led to believe this is the 58th Mini ever off the production
line (after the prototypes)

The car is still road worthy and in excellent condition. It has had one
respray in it's time in the same colour.

It also contains the original 'jam jar' windscreen fluid holder, which we
were told that there were none left in the country at a recent convention -
is this true?

If anyone can confirm our thoughts that it may well be the oldest mini in
the UK on the road then we would be interested to hear your comments.

Regards,

Andrew.

I've just paid $10NZD for the Jam Jar style window washer bottle at a jumble
sale, rare as hens teeth they are but I was lucky.
I remember seeing one at and auto jumble in the UK for 50gbp, including the
brakets etc.
Mines for my 1960 850 which had one of the ealry plastic ones in it. mine
was 1st registered in the UK in May 1960 and exported to NZ in Dec 1960 and
is possibly the 2nd oldest I know of in NZ.

Hi there - We had 3 59's a couple of years ago and ended up selling two and
keeping the earliest which is number 45 off the production line.  I think it
was built in July  and was registered before the launch date at the end of
August 1959.  I've not got the numbers to hand but will look them up for
comparison.

I think there are a few others knocking around that are earlier ?

Glass washer bottles are indeed very hard to get hold of now - I think Nick
Rogers at Min-e-bitz in Sheffield had one for sale a month or so ago, but I
don't know how much it went for !

Well, well, what a small world.... I used to work with a guy who had number
42 off the line. But is was a long time ago (I would guess early 80's) and I
doubt it still exists. It was fairly heavily customised then. I did meet him
a few years later and he still had it in his parents garage then, so you
never know.

Just think.... they would have been able to see each other on the production
line!

It wasn't that dark red on on eBay by any chance?

I don't know if it's the earliest, I heard of a guy restoring a July
1959 car.  621AOK is the first production Mini, which is in the Gaydon
museum.

Have a work with the guys at http://www.59mini.org/

And post your findings!

I have a January 1962 MK1, but that about the 200,000th car :-P

No this model was bought from a lady who was a friend of my fathers auntie.

Thanks for the link - I'll drop them a line.
