Driving test in Mini?

Hi everyone

Just considering putting in for my driving test in my Mini 25, and was
wondering if anyone has any opinions on being examined in a mini (in
UK). The 25 has headrests, left wing mirror, etc, so it passes all the
criteria, but I've been learning to drive in a modern car and the
whole style of driving seems different.

As far as the manouvres go, the mini beats the modern car hands down,
largely through much better observations and feel of the handling. My
concern is that I'm quite slow away from a standing start, and I can't
just box down the gears from 4th to 2nd when I get to a roundabout (as
BSM teach you), it takes much more skill/ engine rev matching, and I
was wondering if anyone knows whether examiners take this into
account/ are generous and make allowance?

I've failed once in a BSM car which costs about £200 a time when you
include car hire (they are complete w***ers) and so I figure I can
take it at least three times for the cost of going with BSM again...

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

Go for it, my nephew and Niece who are twins, passed their driving tests in
their 87' Mini Mayfair one after the other 2 years ago.

Good luck.

I have to say that you should take the test in whatever you feel most
comfortable in. That is, the car that gives you the most confidence. I had
my own car (Morris Marina.... ahem!) long before my test and actually ended
up with more hours in it than the school cars (which were Mini's!). So I
took the test in the Marina.

I can't say I'm an expert on test requirements. I would assume that as long
as you are not doing anything that is considered dangerous, or showing lack
of car control, it shouldn't get you a failure. What did you fail on first
time, Will?

In my day (damn, that sounds old!!) there was no hire fee for the school car
on a test day. So I can understand your logic about the ?200.

Whichever you choose, I wish you the best of luck.

now that is an admission that I'm surprised anyone would make LOL mind you I
suppose its beat sitting it in an Allegro...or a more modern car of similar
size with a hatchback on it LOL

Last time I failed on parallel park (BSM muppet had said this wouldn't
be necessary as the test centre had car parking bays which they'd make
you reverse into) and hesitancy (I went over the top in being extra
careful). Needless to say of course I want to be a great driver,
parallel parking and all, and if I can take the test in my car I'll
happily practice all night, but I don't want to give those ****s at
BSM anymore of my money.

Thanks for all your encouragement everyone, I'm gonna go for it.

i done my driving test in my mini and although the examiner wasnt too happy
about it but i mentioned that its fully road legal and i wasn't prepared to
drive anyone else's car nor any other car and i just got into my car and
waited for the prik to get in, he didnt seem too happy especially at one
point when he asked me if i could overtake one car or wether my car was
capable!!! wot the f*u that really did my day. I passed and after he signed
the paper i showed him what was my mini capable of. the t@at.

Go for it mate, its a lot more fun in a mini and it will even get you
noticed more with the opposite sex! lol

There shouldn't be any problems with you taking your car for the test.  I
would take your Insurance documents too plus I think you HAVE to fit a
second rear view mirror for the examiner AFAIK.

best regards

True.

Also, make sure the car is tidy/smells nice.... Give the examiner a good
impression.

Did my test (and indeed learned to drive) in a Mini way back in 1988.
Best bit I remember was the examiner moving his seat closer to the
dash so he could rest his kneeboard on it, but was so close that when
we did the "emergency stop" I stotted his head off the screen!

Also know of a couple of people who used Mins more recently without
any problem, so go for it - and good luck!!
