1994 Cooper 1.3i, just refitted power unit after gearbox rebuild, is it
possible to fit the clutch centre plate the wrong way round?

I have some more clutch related questions but need to get this one out of
the way first!

Regards Malcolm

It is possible to fit the friction plate the wrong way around. The effect is
that the clutch will not dis-engage, because it is being forced up against
the back plate.

thanks Stewart, I'm not clear on what you mean by not dis-engaging, when I
press pedal down it doesn't go right down to floor and the end stop is still
about 2 mm clear of the housing cover, is this the effect I would get or
could this be down to wear in the pivot pin and ball on the release arm. I
have been able to drive it but all the clutch action is at the limit of the
travel.

Sounds about right, The clutch plate is marked "Flywheel Side" i.e. raised
side towards the block, flat side towards the spring or pressure plate
depending on which type of clutch your using
