Spluttering

Once upon a time there was a 1300, running a 1 3/4 SU, and when you
really stuck your foot up it, it would splutter and occasionally
backfire out through the carb mouth. The 1300 went to a better place,
and an 1100 went in. Using the same carb, (and yes I realise this is
way to big for an 1100) and lo and behold, besides making pitiful
power, when you plant foot, it vents gas out through the carb.

Bearing in mind that the needle is probably miles out, and the carb to
big to boot, has anyone come across this problem? I have disconnected
the vacuum advance and this makes no difference.

Questions:

How important is the ballast capacitor(I think it?s a cap) that I have
sometimes seen on the coil? I have rewired my mini after the old loom
started to short in too many places, so it is possible that the
problems are of an electrical nature. I don?t have the ballast cap.

Next question, is there anyone in Hamilton, NZ, that feels like a
challenge? The car makes next to no power and my skills are stretched
trying to find out why.

Any comments appreciated.

When did you last check the dashpot oil level?

When I put the new motor in, the dash level is fine.

I tried playing with the timing today, if I twist the diz to the right
the spluttering under load goes away, but it burns very blue now, like
there is a lot of oil being burnt, which it doesn't do at less
advanced(?) firing angles.

And the cap on the coil is to stop radio interference.

I would tend to set the timing static and check the advance with a light
just to see what happens in the advance curves.

You may have a seized mechanical advance function.

And Mark was sitting next to Elvis in the spaceship, which I thought was
kinda strange, but then they turned to me and said:

Sounds like you have a weak mixture under load.

Weak mixtures require a lot more ignition advance, which explains why it
improves things when you wind the dizzy clockwise.
