Experts and non-experts,
My Rover 1275 spi just developed a high pitch whine as I cycle through the
gears. The tone follows the speed and gear. It is always noticable, but most
noticable when going down hill and gearing down such as coming down the hill
to my house when I am gearing down to stop. It drives fine, and the noise is
not heard if I take it out of gear. It sounds like the transmission to me.
Any thoughts from this short description?

I'm not quite sure of your description. Does the pitch change with speed or
engine revs? i.e. when you change up (and the revs reduce), does the pitch
reduce or stay the same?
If it is revs related, I would suggest that it might be the idler gear
thrusts worn.
If it is speed related, it must be something after the mainshaft. Maybe
differential? As a high pitched noise, it is not so likely to be deep in the
gearbox since the noise would tend to be muted.
What oil are you using in the engine/gearbox? It must be at least 10W/40.
Higher mileage units are better on 20W/50. And ignore the Rover service
intervals. They are pure fiction. Change the oil and filter at least every
6000 miles.

hiya
sounds like the gearbox idle shaft bearing. you will need an enthusiast or
a specialist to confirm or dispell this.
