As in DIY?
I don't think it'd be possible, I've not seen one, but by all accounts the
5 speed boxes Jack Knight.. and that other place ( ummmmm ) do... there's
not alot of room after all of the fancy trickery.
They're a little $eek too aren't they?

Aye ... definitely the main reason I'm thinking that maybe a switch to a
2.9:1 (or 2.7:1) final drive ratio might be a better fit on the cost /
benefit curve for my semi-regular trans-pennine jaunts ...

These opinions might not even be mine ...

I happen to have a 5 speed box in my garage, there is loads of room for
gear number 5 . but as for DIY , not really unless you have a milling
machine, gear cutter and ali welding facilities.
Having said that I did see an ad in mini world selling them for about ?1000
instead of the normal ?2000

It was at the link I gave.
Long time no see by the way. Are you still living near Newcastle? I am
building a new pickup and then going to sell the blue one later on when it
is ready....

Still living near Newcastle - but commuting to South Shields daily. Got
a blue '94 carb Sprite now (daily use)... along with the blue '82 HLE
and purple '81 City E... but now have NO garage space ;)

The repairman will never have seen a model quite like yours before.

The new pickup is having the works starting with a good sandblasting and
replacing just about every panel ;)

Here is what I last wrote about it 23rd Jan 2002 (thanks google, saved me a
lot of time ;)
"This is only my experience with Mini Sport and I in no means wish
to slander them but.....
The time I had dealings with them they tried to charge me double
the verbal quote they gave me by charging me for new radius arms
rather than reconditioned.
Went something like this....
me - "how come the cost has gone up by double?"
him - "it says on the report 'all seized up'"
me - "impossible, I changed the back plates and everything 2
weeks ago"
him - "oh, right...." looks again "he also had to replace a piece
of brake pipe"
Me - "where?"
him - "along the radius arm"
Me -" for 200 quid, a 6" bit of tubing?" (Is it 24 carrot gold?)
him - "hang on a second" and goes into the back from whence the
manager comes smiling shiftily until he finally gets up to the
counter where he says (and pay attention as this is a classic)
"I hear your having trouble paying"
Me -"no, I am refusing to pay! You said 200 (or whatever, I
can't remember) and you are now trying to charge me 480 (or
whatever). There is no question of me not being able to pay, I
am REFUSING"
him - "lets have a look"
blah blah blah
him (translated) - "it is the oiks fault he is trying to charge
you for new parts at 160 each rather than recon at 50 each" and
we ended up settling on 100 quid more than he quoted me for "all
seized up" but they were brand new backplates, cylinders shoes drums and
everything (literally 2 weeks since they
were put on!) a 6 inch piece of brake pipe and 2 new nuts.
So I feel ripped off by them. I would never buy standard parts
from them as they are way overpriced. I would never have them do
any work to my car as they ripped me off and tried to rip me off"
So there you have it - the bit I like best is where the oik went out back
and told the manager I was unable to pay!!The Muffin Man

I understand it now. I agree with you if they do something like that to me I
would be pissed off too.
In my case it will be more difficult to do this because I have a proof off
the prices they ask (twice :catalogue and on their site (possible small
price changes could happen I would understand)

Yeah, it is the idiots they have in the shop that put me off...

I wouldn't fit a 5 speed box. I've known 3 people who had the S Works 5 from
JC Gargaes and all of them had problems. They are no longer being made by JK
or JC so parts could be come an issue. Mini Sport are still selling them,
but again I've heard varying reports on how succesful they are.
Running a higher diff ration such as 2:9 or 2:7 is an option, but for the
carb version of the A series pulling a 2:7 is a big ask, the last of the
Rover Coopers run a 2:7, but they manage it due to the much higher tourque
of the multipoint injection. My 2000 model is just such as car and she's
great on a long run but no rocket ship off the lights, but once the revs are
up and your rolling its just simply fabulous to drive.Mind you I also have
the S works package on her. A carb engine will pull a 2:9 ratio but again
you will find your off the line times are well down, and you will need to do
some mods to the car to get it pulling cleanly, mainly by way of increasing
the cars touque, such as LCB/Head etc. Mind you by the time you've done all
that mucking about and cost you might be better to just look around and find
a reasonably prices multipoint????
I reccomend that you find a dealer selling a multipoint and take it for a
drive so you get a feel for the higher ratio and check to see if you like
it.

PS my car has no problem pulling up the big mountains we have in NZ

I think you will also find that most 5 speed boxes are not guaranteed if you
bolt a modified engine on top. They are not intended as a performance
modification, just for ease of driving.
