Anyone ever tried making 'home made' dashboards for their mini? Even basic ones
I see cost a small fortune and I'd like to create something that little bit
different. Any ideas?

...I forgot to mention that I'm looking for somewhere I can get hold of a
dashboard template, so that I can make my own!

I guess that has been done quite often in the long life of Mini ;-)
Making a template is not too hard, use card board for the first "modell",
cut and try until it fits properly. Then make a wooden (or whatever you
fancy) one from this template. You'll have to grind an angle at the upper
edge at the back to suit the upper rail.

As you also ask for already made templates:

Google for "Scott Beavis" he has made a drawing in the past and I believe it
can be found on his homepage. Alternativelly, google for "Silliiland" (Is
that the right amount of "i" and "l" - anyone??) There you can find Scott's
template, too

OoooH!
Can I visit!?!!

And do I have to use my NZ passport when entering New Zealand, even
though Australia insists I use my British one (which has my resident
visa in it)?

Hi Tim

I might be dim, but what are chooks??

We have just stuck with 4 horses for now (although one is in foal).....
well.... when I say 'we', what I actually mean is 'Sarah'. I am allergic to
them!! I am just the hired hand to fix fences, hang gates, harrow the land,
etc Still it justifies the Land Rover! Just been out and bought some Old Man
Emu suspension for the old girl...... the Land Rover, not Sarah.......
argghhhh!! Think I'll leave it at that before I dig an even deeper hole for
myself!

They're the frozen birds they give to the winner of the chook raffle at
the pub.

I can't believe they would do that to birds.  Any self respecting women
would put her foot down!!

OK, so I am dim! My wife informed me what chooks were.... but then she's
Scottish so speaks a totally different language too :-)

Hi, Well, if you dig the hole too deep, you can always use the landie to
pull yourself out.

But of course, my friend! Simply the best. Got the rears fitted yesterday,
but ran out of light before I could do the fronts. So it looks like a hot
rod at the moment with the back way up in the air. Combine that with
knackered front springs and it is very strange!

Ah... see, can I use that to justify the amount of money I spend on it to my
wife? Mmm... maybe not!

It's not that difficult as long as you have access to a jig-saw for cutting
the holes.  The trickiest bit is working out how you are going to mount the
dashboard to the car, I used little 'L' shaped brackets on the top and
bottom rails but there is not much room to get a drill in to make the
mounting holes into the rails and also the rails are curved so you need to
centre punch well to stop the drill wandering.

Do it in 2 stages, first make yourself a template from cardboard because
it's easy to cut and it doesn't matter if you muck it up.  Once you have the
shape you can then trace round it onto your proper material.  I would not
recommend MDF like in the link below as it loses it's strength if it gets
wet (although you could seal it with varnish I guess), I used a sheet of
aluminium.  Cut the holes for any switches and gauges and then cover it with
whatever you fancy.  I used black vinyl, I know others that have used a thin
sheel of foam and then black vinyl for a 'padded' look (required for the UK
SVA test on kit cars).

I made one out of checkerplate once with a jigsaw.  I also carved one out of
an inch think chunk of pine once.  Bet you've never seen a nicely varnished
pine dash before ;)
