Hi Group

I have an intermittent fault with Norris, my '86 Mayfair.

My Indicators have stopped working (again), as has my rear de-mister,
headlamp flasher and stereo.

I have double earthed at the front end (replaced original and added an extra
to the grill mounting at the front),
and replaced both battery terminals and the rear earth strap/lead.  All
fuses have been checked, including the inline radio fuse.

My hazards still work, and for a time, switching these on spurred my
indicators to make a brief showing.
However, not any more.

Can anyone point to any other things I could look at, or should I bite the
bullet and take Norris to an auto electrician?
(the last thing I want is a full re-loom)
Any ideas about a rough cost?

Hope I've given enough info

hi Karen have you checked the relevant fuses?  this does sound like an
earthing problem, but if you are not sure what to do try and find an auto
electrian who comes recommended and hopefully you wont be ripped off.
good look,mark.w

Wiggle the hazard warning light switch in the off position.  Does it fix it?
The hazards cut out the circuit and the switch is notorious for not turning
off properly.

You may want to try taking the switch to pieces and putting it back together
again.  They are a bit crap.

I had this problem with a '93 mini Sprite.  The problem started with the
indicators and whilst checking the fuses, it appeared to affect the
headlights, rear demister, etc.  I even lost illumination to the dash board!

I believe the indicator problem was due to deterioration of the actual
indicator housing - they became badly earthed if I remember right.  Minis
are notorious for rotting in this area.  Some home made earthing to the
backs of the indicators and some good sanding of rusty contacts sorted this.

The problems with the other things were all due to rubbish in-line fuse
holders.  They are a pig to get back together properly in the restricted
mini engine bulkhead (ouch! my head! etc..).  If you can, try some light
sanding on the contacts in the fuse holders and on the fuses themselves if
necessary before putting each one carefully back together.  In line fuse
holders are quite cheap to replace (from a petrol service station) if
necessary, but make sure you connect them in well else you can create more
problems later.

Hope this helps.

Al.

had the very same prob, it was that damm fuse box, all the termmials were
Full of crap , I cleaned them all up and changed all the fused this fixed
the prob, but about a year later same prob this time I moved the fuse box
inside the car now that fixed it

Yep, thats it. Intermittent problems like this is 99% likelyhood of being
the 4 way fuse box. Everything on the bulkhead of this age of Mini suffers
from corrosion..... fuse box, hazard flasher unit, wiper motor park switch,
etc. But that fuse box is a best seller!

As you found, Rocky, you can't fix it..... it just has to be replaced.

There's no harm in checking the main fuse box, but the items you listed as
faulty are all covered by in-line fuses on '86 models.

<snip helpful advice>

Thanks a lot folks.
methinks I will be under the bonnet this weekend.

Yep, me too. I actually found that the terminals were so badly
corroded that a couple of them snapped off when I tried to clean them
up. New fuse box in the end, but I see recently that the new one has
started to corrode too. If I could find room inside the car for the
box, then i'd put it inside, but there's too many other little
electronic black boxes and relays already!

I've currently got a similar problem.

Pulled over and put my hazard lights on (yellow line cancellers).  The
lights flashed then began to speed up in pace.  Eventually they stopped and
now the indicaters won't work.

I checked the fuses, seem good.  Still trying to find the solution.

Your flasher can (indicator relay, whatever the local name for it is
there) has probably given up the ghost. Since they're pretty cheap and
quick and easy to replace, thats probably the first thing I would try.
