Fuel Guage Problem

The fuel gauge on my 1980 1275GT isn't working. The sender unit is new and
it does not read even when the sender wires are linked. The temp gauge is
still working and all the wires on the back of the clocks appear to be
pushed in. Before I mess about changing clocks is there anything else to
check? Where else might the circuit be broken?

Many thanks

Mark

What's the rest of the electrics on your Mini like?  Is anything else
playing up?  The reason I ask is because the fuel gauge on my sisters Open
Classic Mini was playing up and it was down to the wiper motor park switch
failing.  The fuel gauge would fail, but if we sprayed WD40 at the back of
the wiper motor, the gauge would work again and yes the wipers need a new
park switch as they aren't parking themselves.

Other than that check the connection on the side of the fuel tank, maybe
it's a bit corroded.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
There should be a voltage regulator behind the dash feeding a controlled
voltage to the instruments, This can go faulty.
It is a little metal box with 3 terminals and a metal tag on one end.

And add to that, it's easy to knock a wire off while poking around. I
did that recently and luckily found the problem before replacing a
"faulty" gauge. Check to make sure the terminals are actually stuck onto
their proper receptacles, not just hanging in front of them.

This is a 1275GT (UK judging by Marks e-mail address), so the instruments
are the ones with a flexible printed circuit on the back. These can be prone
to problems when they get old. Look at it very carefully to see if you can
find a break in the circuit anywhere. It might show signs of burning.

On these instruments, the voltage regulator is plugged directly into the
back (I think!).

What about pulling the wire off the sender unit ,and earthing it out on the
boot floor ,
if the gauge reads FULL, then the gauge and the wiring are OK,
the body of the sender unit or the tank might need earthing , or the new
sender could be faulty
Worth a try ??

Same test applies to Temp gauge,

Had problems with my fuel gauge about a year ago. Got a replacement
sender from the scrappy, still no joy. Got a replacement gauge from
scrappy, still no joy. Got a replacement voltage regulator from
scrappy, still no luck.
Bought a brand new sender and it worked straight away!

The location of the regulator is dependant on whether you have the
english or Jap made gauges. The jap ones have the twist-in bulb
holders and the english ones have the push-in black kind.
On the english ones, its stuck in the back on the unit, but on the jap
ones, I think it's some how integrated into the circuit!?!

HTH,
Dan
