Can anyone help in identifying what car(s)came with motor SN 28G-255-998. I
can not find a cross reference. Is there a x-reference website?
The head is SN 12G295 and is for 998 Cooper or MG1100 motor.
   Thanks!

That looks like a casting number, not an engine number.

The engine number is on the top of the block, level with the join with
the head, just in front of #1 cylinder.

Which suggests a 998 or 1098 motor.

Greeting Graham!
Thank you for the assistance. How can I tell the difference between a
998 and  the 1098 engine?
I checked the place you indicated. In front on the #1 cylinder is a
plate (held down by two phillips screws) imprinted with 28G-255-998. The
block is the pre-A+ version (two bolts hold the clamp to the boss. The
distributor is then clinched by a nut and bolt thru the clamp).
The reason I am curious is because the person I got the car from said it
was a "rare mini", but she could not remember why. It is a left hand drive
and I believe it was an Italian version,  imported into the US, due to the
gauge naming (benzolina).

Does is help shed any light on the subject?

The stroke is different by 10%. There's really not much else.

In Australia, the engine number is stamped into the block there, and
stays with the motor for life, so you can always tell what the motor was
when it left the factory. In the UK they rivet a plate on there, so you
can never be sure that the engine number actually belongs to that
engine. As for attaching it with screws! It could have come from
anywhere!

It may just be a coincidence that it ends "-998" or it may be an engine
reconditioner's id plate indicating it is a 998.

Does the body have some sort of a build plate or a body number
somewhere?
Hunter Mackintosh - 21 Dec 2003 12:42 GMT
I could not locate any body ID anywhere. I shall check after returning from
the Christmas/New Year's Holiday. Thanks for your help.
I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year,
Hunter
