If I buy a gearbox for my mini (to do sprints with) witch should I choose
and what's the difference between both ?

usually straight cut for competition. faster engagement

The straight cut are noisy so they use helical for street cars.

Others may add to this.

Advantages of straight cut gears are that they have less power loss, and are
stronger due to not side loading   and can be cheaply made in different
ratios.

The dissadvantage is the are noisy (esp the drop gears, that are not
submerged in oil) and they have a shorter life so are not suitable for road
millage engines.

And the difference between Dog box kit and straight cut drop gearkit ? both
have the name competition next to it but no futher explain. My technical
english is not that good to understand all too.

Also do they make a difference in rubber coupling ,pot joint and hardy
spicer type. With used to be on a 1991 mini 1000 cc check mate ?(I think
rubber coupling if I look to them but maybe internal differences ???

Thanks in advance

A1991 mini will have pot joints.
Early mini's did have the rubber coupling, but these are no good as a
performance item.
The  hardy spicer type were fitted to the cooper S and a very strong.

With regards to the gearbox question.
What is your engine spec?
If you only want standard ratio's I would stick with the helical box. Get it
rebuilt by someone who knows what they are doing and you shouldn't have any
problems.
If you have a high spec engine then perhaps consider straight cut drop
gears, but most importantly, make sure they have the correct float. Most
failiours I have seen have been due to badly shimmed drop gears.

It's a 1380 cc unit with about 110 a 120 bhp at the crank (If I may believe
the seller of it) I don't know the manufacturer of it but I think he said
swiftune

Good tip that link. I will keep it on a straight cut synchro version but not
yet sure if it will be a 4 or 5 speed box. Witch company is good ?

others)

5 speed boxes are not suitable for high powered applications.
If you want a recomendation for the best place, then I've heard very good
things about ML motorsport. Their gearboxes are sposed to be top notch.
They have a web page you can find on google.
The telephone number is +44 (0)1959 533130
Tell them what you want and I'm sure they can advise you best.

OK thanks.

The 5 speed Jack Knight Box is bullet proof because they don't unlike others
bolt the 5th gear on the end, they make the shaft all one piece.
MiniSpeed are a great place to get Jack Knight boxes from as are MED in
Leicester.
Good Hunting.

Karl.
Currently running a 1450cc 110bhp-124lbs/ft on a 5 speed Jack Knight.

hmmm sounds like a nice engine to me :-)
Where do you bought it ? Med,KAD,ML Motorsport

I'm interested because I bought a second mini and I'm thinking of preparing
it too for motorsport.
Karl - 08 Jan 2004 21:14 GMT
The Box came from MED in around 92-93 not to sure and the Head is from
MiniSpeed 36/32 stage 5 as for the block and crank well they were just
machined from standard by a company in the midlands, the cam is a Kent 296
with standard rockers.
You should be able to find a similar engine spec at MED and I can recommend
them for there quality and attention to detail.

Karl.
