Hi all I'm the very proud owner of a 1985 Mini City 1450cc and I'm suffering
from the problem of an incorrect reading Speedo, The car is sat on 13"
superlites with Bridgestone Potenza's now as far as I can tell from
stripping the gearbox down the Speedo drive runs of the main shaft so is
directly related to engine RPM.
The things I think come into the equation are RPM, Diff Ratio, Tire Diameter
and Speedo Drive Ratio.
From this do any of you have any experience of a similar setup and can put
me on the correct path for what Speedo drive I should be using to get close
to the correct indicated speed on my new 120MPH 3 dial clocks.
Or know of any electronic Speedos on the market that use some sort of drive
shaft sensor.

Thanks
Karl.

Try http://www.speedycables.com/  tell them your spec and they will be
able to re-cal your speedo to suit.

If the engine is sat on the original 1985 gearbox with it's original diff
ratio, then the speedo drive gears will be fine. The 13" tyres are exactly
the same diameter as the 12" ones they replaced.
The problem lies with your replacement speedo head. It is likely to be set
to 1000 turns per mile. There are several companies who can recalibrate it
for you. As Drew says, Speedy Cables is one of them. Or buy a general
classic car magazine like Practical Classics and there will be ads in the
back for relevant companies.
What they will need you to do is mark a wheel and roll the car forward by a
particular number of wheel rotations. Then count how many revolutions of the
speedo cable you get.
