Hi Folks I hope you all had a great Xmas and New Years.

I've got a Mini City E 1987 and it's been highly modded since new with a
1450cc motor and 13x7 Super Lites, Now my problem is the steering column
shakes like mad at idle and I was wondering if there is a bushing at the top
near to the steering wheel that needs replacing, as I've not had it to
pieces just yet I thought I'd ask you valued opinions first..
It seems to me to be the inner steering rod that's moving not the outer
pipe.

Thanks
Karl.

Sounds like the top bushing. It is a plastic device and they do wear. There
was a change at 1985 (not sure what changed, but it is a different part
number after that date) and the later item is only available as a Rover
product. Try your local main dealer for one.

earlier mini's had a felt bush in the top, they are prone to shrinking when
they get old, especially if they run dry ( they should be soaked in oil when
you fit a new one.

But this is an 87 car which will have a plastic bush. However, they do wear
in the same way as the early cars.

Is there an equivalent bush at the lower end of the column too?  I don't
have much play at the top but plenty at the bottom!!

Shaun yep there's a bush at both ends.... as I've now found out having taken
it to pieces..

Are the spline at the base of the steering column and the matching
spline on the rack healthy? Is the clamp bolt tight?

Yes, splines are good and clamp is tight.  I'll go digging in my lockup and
find the spare column for comparison.

Cheers,
Shaun.

Hi All,
I had a minivan years ago with a similar fault, it turned out to be tight
tappets, causing the imbalance and vibration,
once the tappets and carb was set correctly the vibration was cured,
