I'm thinking of getting a Mk1 but it needs the boot floor, inner sills
and battery box repair. How difficult would it be to use a mig welder,
or anouther type of welder to do this myself or would it be better to
pay a specialist to do it, and could anyone who has had work done by
garages or specialists recommend any garages in the London, Essex and
Kent area who did the work very well and how much they charged for it.

thanks
James

Whats wrong with you no sense of adventure :)

Seriously a good point to remember when welding - petrol vapor does
ignite very rapidly.

If you do not have any skills or experience: seek help.

Settings of the MIG welder are very delicate. Choose a welder with at least
4 power settings and weld with argon/CO2 (80/20).

Buy 1 mm steel and practice a lot.
Buy a booklet "MIG welding"  by Chris Graham: ISBN 0 9525039 0 5. LB

... and rental of welding equipment is quite cheap. if you have friends
who are mechanics, you could even borrow the stuff! (then again, you may
as well beg or pay them to do it)

welding is a mystical art form,

I remember a young lad keen and pennyless who had an old wreck of a mini
that should really have been scrapped. but. it was the only car he could
afford, unfortunately, it needed inner and outer sills doorsteps A posts
inner wings boot floor, rear valance subframe mounts and great chunks of the
footwells. It would have been a challenge for an experienced vehicle
restorer to put back together, and probably quicker and cheaper to buy a new
shell, But the young lad was so pig headed and determined to make the old
wreck work that he spent hours with a borrowed welder blowing holes in what
was left of the rust, setting fire to insulation, nearly poisioning himself
by trying to weld to old fibreglass repairs and underseal... It took the lad
weeks of weekends and late nights to get it ready to pass an MOT test.

But
I did learn how to weld.
