Someone has offered me a mini 1967 850 Mini and it's not in the best
shape, it needs some welding and the engine probably needs a rebuild
due to it not being run more than a few times since 1993.

1) What is invovled in an engine rebuild, i.e. what parts will have to
be replaced, what will have to be done to the block etc. and what sort
of cost?

2) The body requires new sills,(I think part of floor not hole but I'm
enquiring about the serverity (sorry spelling)) floor, battery box and
boot I was planning to do the work my self but since I haven't used a
welder before how difficult is it to get to grips with and are the
parts I've mentioned major structural parts? (My Design technology
teacher at my college said he could teach me but I just want to know
how difficult it is before I try)

thanks in advance and sorry about all the questions but I need to
learn some how.

James :)

check all fluid levels ___ add new fuel___new oil 10 / 40w new oil filter
check battery and grab a can of        START YOU BA*ST*D
and run the engine not over revving it
when is running listen for knocks / rattles on rev up and run down
if any knocks / rattles then a rebuild is nesseresey

Unless the engine is high mileage or was burning lots of oil, there's a good
chance it'll be just fine with a good service.  Change the oil, filter,
points, condensor, dizzy cap, leads and plugs.  I'd probably strip the carb
to check the float chamber is not full of crud and that the piston is free
to move in the dashpot.

Remove any old petrol and replace with some fresh stuff.

Remove the spark plugs and disconnect the coil -ve lead and turn the engine
over until you see oil pressure (assuming you have a gauge or warning lamp).
Put the plugs back on, reconnect the coil lead and try and start it.

I did this on a spare Mini engine that had sat outside under plastic for 5
years and it started first time as soon as the fuel made it through!!
