Mini Mayfair Auto - Advice needed

I have the chance of buying a Mayfair 1992, that's done 11,000 miles for
?1650.  The gearbox is automatic and I am a bit worried because of expense
and availability of spares should the gearbox go wrong, has anyone out there
got any advice for me re gearbox and is auto not so good with Minis? - my
ideal would be a Cooper but they are a bit scarce down south.  I have now
sold my City and would really like to be back on the road asap!  Thanks

Had one for years and never let me down.
Now looking for another but not many in Scotland.

Not the best of things to drive though. sluggish and  jerky at times.

Other than that fine.

You can adjust the throttle to gearbox linkage to alter the gearshift
pattern.

On my auto Moke, I fitted an LPG system with an Impco throttle. It had a
larger throttle cable cam than the original HS4, with a larger total
movement of the gearbox linkage rod between idle and full throttle, so I
was able to get a more aggressive gearshift pattern without making it
change down too early on a trailing throttle.

if the gearbox goes wrong, do what a lot of people i know have done and
simply change the whole engine unit - you can pick up a low mileage
metro and use the whole engine from that very cheaply.

Except the auto subframe is different isn't it?

Auto motor and box assemblies are cheaper than manuals.

Duh, my bad - not having seen many Metro's didn't click they came in the no
left foot required variety :)

I think the auto is an underrated version of the Mini.

Sure, a 998 auto isn't quick, but neither are the thousands of 850s that
were sold in the UK. And a well set up 1275 auto in a Mini is at least
as much fun as most manual Minis.

It's like driving a road registered go kart!

Sounds like a bargain to me. I'm not familiar with UK prices, but any 12
year old car with only 11,000 miles is a good start.

First of all, it's only got 11,000 miles - is it really likely to have
problems in the medium term? And if/when it eventually does, aren't
complete auto motor and box assemblies are pretty cheap?

If the condition of the rest of the car corresponds with the mileage,
and if the price is reasonable by local standards, I'd buy it.

Agreed.
I put two replacement motor/box assemblies through the Moke over the
years, not because it suffered major seriously expensive failures, but
because a complete motor and box only cost me Au$200 - under 100 pounds.

I agree with graham. Autos are seriousely underrated, they are bags of fun
round town. A car with 11,000 miles on the clock (if genuine) should be a
good buy, change the oil AS SOON AS YOU GET IT. Continue
to change the oil (Mineral!) regularly and it should give you
miles of trouble free motoring. Remember the changes are more frequent
then in a manual mini.

I'm kinda dissapointed my new hornet is not an auto, they really are great
town cars.
