Identifying steering rack

Hello All,
I have a 1960 Mk1 Morris Mini (left hand drive). The original steering rack
needs to be cleaned and lubed as the rubber gaiters are torn. When I bought
it it came with a new (and I assume) later model rack amongst the spare
parts. The previous owner only mentioned that it had a faster turning rate
than the original but neglected to say what model it was for. Are all later
model racks compatible with a Mk1 car as long as one updates to Mk2 steering
arms? If not how can I identify which model rack I have.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Standard Mk1 racks have around 2.25 turns lock to lock. Later ones are
around 2.6 turns. Well, I think I remember correctly!

think you memory is about right, either that or mine is dodgy too....
mk1 and mk2 racks differ only in the ratio's, so can be a straight swap, I
recall that mk3 and later had differerent mountings and longer track rods?

The rule, as I know it, is that when you change from a Mk.I rack to
Mk.II, you need to change the steering arms to Mk.II as well. The Mk.I
arms with a Mk. II rack will allow too much travel in the swivel hub
and damage the CV joint. From memory.

I don't recall any major changes in Mk.III racks but there could have
been something later. The major suppliers seem to only list standard
racks as Mk.II - on.

Cheers,

Kelley
