Strange Mini sighting - CH4, Hilter's plan to A-Bomb new York!

Intersting docmentary on CH4 (UK) about Hitler's plans to attack New York
in WWII, including rockets, flying wings and space planes. The latter
referred to Eugen Sanger who developed a plan for a hypersonic, reusable
plane ala space shuttle. Anyhoo, there was an interview with Sanger's son,
who drove up to his Dad's former workplace in... a Mini!

The sight of a German guy driving a Mini - and not a BINI/MINO - was
deliciously ironic.

Why do you associate Germans with the MINI more than the Mini? Both cars
were designed by Rover (or its predecessors) in the UK anyway! But please
let's not get into that one again..... pleeaase!!!

But seriously, the Mini was sent to Germany in large numbers. Many German
Rover dealers even made their own limited editions. For example they had 13"
wheels long before the UK got any from the factory. The Lamm convertible was
another example of this practice. Rover liked it so much they started
building a UK version.

Maybe "Bavarian Motor Works" is a clue..?

I really didn't want to get into this again, but the Mini was built by BMW
for 9 years or whatever it was. The MINI is Rover designed (originated
before BMW ownership) and built in the UK by a British workforce. There is
little reason why an individual in any country should drive one make of car
verses another. Although I do concede that there may be a tendency towards
ownership of locally built cars/makes.
I was actually being light-hearted about your post, but it seems you may
have taken it too seriously.

No, it was built by Rover, a British company owned by BMW - that's difference.

So is the Honda Civic, but that doesn't really make a British car, does it?

Did I say it was a British car?

If you go back to my original response, you will see all I was commenting on
was the association of a German individual driving a Mini rather than a
MINI. Sorry, but I cannot see what is ironic about a German national driving
a British car. Now, if it was the CEO of BMW driving a Mini..... *that*
would be ironic! And, I for one, would just love to see it!

I would say the lines "The MINI is Rover designed (originated before BMW
ownership) and built in the UK by a British workforce" would imply that.
Your words!

Ironic because it was a German guy driving an Austin/Morris/British
Leyland/Rover Mini as opposed to a BMW MINI.

Oh never mind, it made me smile anyway.

hiya
just my piece to add here :-)

I was told by a mini owner while in Germany that a mini is a status symbol
a bit like how german army officers before ww2 enjoyed fox hunting like the
british they looked up to.
Anyway, to own a mini there is like owning a 2.5 BMW here they are
expencive because they are imported and the price of imported parts means
that you need deep pockets.

I agree with Fraggy. From experience I know that Germans are very
enthusiastic over the original Mini.
I have a picture of my old Riley Elf as wall paper on my panasonic
mobile phone, and on a business trip to Cologne last year I was asked
at least a dozen times about the 'Cute little Riley Mini'.

Most people in England haven't got a clue what the car is, but the
German people I spoke to in the bars & clubs around Cologne were
really knowledgeable (unless I  caught an international Mini meet by
mistake). Everyone thought BMW were crazy to stop MG Rover producing
any further Mini's as the cars are so well thought of in Germany.
