Head swapping - some questions

Hi there,

I have reasonable mechanical knowledge but limited practical
experience working with mini engines so I thought that I'd pen down
what I intend to do and throw it to the floor in case there are any
faux pas in there.

I've got two A+ engines:

"Blue"
12HE25 (Metro 1275) block
Stage 1 unleaded mini head
Cracked diff housing

"Red"
12H996AA (MG Metro 1275) block
MG Metro leaded head
Good gearbox/diff casing

My plan is to move the good head from the "Blue" engine onto the "Red"
engine to make a runner. At some stage I'll then replace the bottom
end of the "Blue" engine to get round the cracked diff housing
problem.

Now the questions start:

Does it matter which push rods I use? I'm guessing that I should use
the "Blue" ones as I'm using the "Blue" head.

I'll need to sort out the rocker/valve clearances and plan to use
values recommended for a 1275GT mini engine as this is comparable to
the head. Sound about right?

I'll need to adjust the timing. I'm guessing that I should use the
value recommended for an unleaded 1275 engine (say a later MG Metro).

Is there anything else that I should be wary of?

Thanks for reading this far!

And Elvis was sitting next to James Cohen in the spaceship, which I
thought was kinda weird, but then they turned to me and said:

Keep the pushrods and rocker assembly that belong to the red engine.

That should be fine, but bear in mind that the gaps will close up as the
head gasket beds in. Recheck the clearances after a few runs.

Should be a good enough starting point. It's worth experimenting with the
ignition timing once the car is up and running to get the best advance
you can achieve without pinking. Also, the high-compression A+ engines
tend to run much happier on super unleaded than regular.

Try to get the later revised head gasket, and don't use any kind of
sealing compound on it.

And another question about something I found last night when taking
one of the heads off.

Have a look at this photo:
http://www.jump-around.com/images/mini/strange-washer.jpg

The washer you can see in the middle of the photo had fallen down one
of the holes that the pushrods sit in.

From its size I'm guessing that it was something to do with the valve
springs (by eye it's about the same size as the collet on there).
Either way I'm sure that it shouldn't have been there!

It looks to me about the same size as the washers from the rocker post nuts.
It's not uncommon to find more than one under each nut when taking them off.
I would use the Rockers and Pushrods from the MG Metro engine when fitting
the head from the other 1275 engine this way you only have a mismatch on the
rocker to valve stem and not the pushrod to cam follower.

Karl.

The rocker posts are in the photo and are much larger than the washer,
either 3/16" or 1/4" and there is nothing of that size internal, its not
off the valves.
