Hi.

I have a chance of a set of white rover minilites,
but I really wanted silver. These are the right size
with really good tyres and at price a I don't mind
paying.

What I don't know is, can they be cleaned and repainted
in the silver that I want, or are white alloys plastic coated?
Is this possible, or should I keep looking?

Thanks.

You could take them to a powder coater in either case and have them sand
blasted and finished in whatever colour you want.

Then they will be in perfect condition and last that way for a long long
time.

What does that cost?

Sand blasting won't remove all finishes though (including powder coat).

Mmmm...I think I'll give it a miss then. I'm not in any rush.
I'll hang off and get what I want rather than just settle.

I've promised myself that I'd get my restoration finished in
the summer, and even then it might be a rolling restoration -
get the body sound, maybe the new engine in, then get it
on the road and see to the details like wheels, paint and trim,
as and when...

Cheers.

Well lets put it this way, LSN powdercoating in Castleford took my rusty old
bike frame, tank, chromed forward controls and chromed spoked wheels with
stainless spokes, removed the finish from all the items and powdercoated
them in either an iridescent purple or metal flake silver for just over 100
quid.

If they can't remove a powdercoated finish and repowdercoat four wheels in a
standard silver for 50quid, I will be surprised.  I think they have also
started doing chrome effect/polished silver powdercoating but don't quote me
on that.

You can't fall off with the quality of finish that modern day powdercoating
gives or the price that it costs.  Shame you can't powdercoat a shell as you
can't use filler.
