Here is the question ;)

Will a Mk2 stalk fit underneath a Mk1 steering column cowl?  If not, did
some of the Mk2's have the key on the column and some on the dash?  If so,
what year was the change in?

Thanks for the help and my never ending quest for classic looks AND
functionality as the missus insists on things like hazard warning lights and
easy to use wind screen wipers and other boring stuff like that.

The Mk2 cowl was wider than the Mk1, so I assume they are not mixable (is
that a word?!).

The Mk3 (1970 on) was the first to use a column key. However, the lock
assembly is no longer available. This is the type that is at 90 degrees to
the column. The Mk4 (1976 on) was the first to use the wipers on a stalk and
the key switch moved round to point more towards the driver. The Mk3's
indicator stalk was basically the same as the Mk2 to look at.

Is the Mk3 the one with the key barrel pointing straight out with a big
bulge to hold it in place?

Is it essential to get a Mk2 column or will the cowl and stalk bolt around
the later one?

Was the wiper switch on the dash rail with the Mk1 and 2 - it can't have
been dual speed then?

Yes.

Err... don't know! I think the actual column is the same. But the brackets
on the outer tube for the cowl will probably be different. Also, the stalk
mounting area on the tube may be different.

All UK Mk1 and Mk2 cars were single speed. When the early rocker switches
(Mk3, 1970-1976) were introduced, there was a 2 speed version which was used
on some export models.

So if I got a second mk1 light switch I could run the two speed motor from
the dash with some constructive wiring ;)

'constructive'....... 'birds nest' is the term you were searching for :-)

But, you might be able to use a Mk1 light switch to do the same thing. You
would need to check carefully. The light switch is off-on-on but the bottom
position still leaves the middle position live (for the side lights). The
two speed wipers might need the middle position to be isolated when the
second speed is connected.

The Aussie two speed wiper motor uses four wires and requires two of
them connected to make it park, so you cannot just use a headlight
switch.

However.... You can use a headlight switch to drive a  couple of
changeover relays to achieve the necessary result - I had a Mini 2 speed
wiper motor in my Minor for a while, using a Minor headlight switch in
place oif the single position wiper switch.

If it appears the UK 2 speed wipers arer the same, ask and I'll dig out
my record of how to make them work.

We have fitted two speed wiper motors to the Mk1 round front and the
switch to match you use a three position toggle switch from the MGB to
run the wipers. (the wiper units were from Clubmans)

Other cars may have the same Lucas switch (part No.) but this was the
one that I asked for cos I was aware that it had the correct number of
terminals for it to work and park.

When wiring the switch up make sure that the placement of the wires is
correct or you will stuff the park switch in the wiper motor.

Don't the side lights turn off when it goes to main beam?  I thought they
did, perhaps I am imagining it.  I will investigate as I have a Mk1 light
switch downstairs in the kitchen cupboard (where all items mini related
should live in all houses.

I will get my multimeter out ;)

No, they stay on. Otherwise, your tail lights would go off too.

Well that solves a mystery ;)
