Hi,
That is exactly what it should do!
The inside of the adjuster is a wedge, which screws in and forces the shoue
outwards towards the brake drum.
However, If the adjuster sems to be going in a long way, it indicates the
shoes are worn badly.

Yes the adjuster goes in so far you can only just get the spanner to grip so
I guess it's new shoes time. Anyway it's going into a garage for a brake
check so they can sort it out there.

Everytime I adjust the rear drums on the pickup (every 3 months or so - man
mini drums suck for maintenance) I always take the drum off, look around and
check the depth. For the sake of an extra 2 mins per side it is worth
knowing that the most important part of the car is a ok!! If you stop
moving forward you are less likely to push up the daisies than if you can't
stop moving forward...

True and as a matter of fact the shoes needed replacing and so did the
drums, so the Mini is stopping again now.
