flat battery

I have a h-reg (1990) mini mayfair.

My battery goes flat on it constantly. When i recharge my battery everything
is fine, the car starts with no problems. The problems start after i've
taken him for a long journey. Once I've been on a long journey the car won't
start again afterwards due to a flat battery.

This sounds like the alternator I know but it's just had a new one. I don't
know too much about cars but i could hazard a guess that because the car
doesn't cut out when the battery is flat (it just won start), the alternator
must be fine because it is powering the spark plugs???

I've spoken to a few people, their ideas involve things such as the fan belt
slipping, (is this viable). Another person was telling me about a problem
with minis to do with the earthing cable on the battery but i couldnt quite
grasp what they were saying, (any ideas about this?).

Thanks a lot for any help you can offer me and after this has been sorted I
have another small problem to tell you about involving a clunking coming
from just beneath the mini to the rear of the front seats.

Cheers
Will.

to check if the battery is charging place a volt meter between the
battery terminals.  This reading should show 11.5~12V  then start the
car and the volts should rise slowly up to the charging rate of the
alterator (13.5V).

What does the altenator lamp do?  this should be bright when you switch
on the ignition then started, as the revs build up should go out. (It
should not glow) The lamp is conected to the altenator and supplies
current to excite the diodes/circuit to charge - make sure that this is
the correct size(W)and the terminals are clean and is working.

You just might need a new battery

had it jacked up recently by you or a mechanic? if the proper jacking points
were not used, someone could have crushed the main live wire running from
the battery, all the way under the car to the starter motor.  i have had
this problem, the shielding to the wire was cut and the wire was exposed and
touching the underside of the car, creating a short circuit and thus
discharging the battery.  i suggest disconnecting the battery and CAREFULLY
jacking the car up to inspect the wire. if it is cut at all, a replacement
isnt that expensive.

obviously just a thought, but if you dont know then you have to check all
avenues.

cheers
happy driving

The clunking you can hear is probably the centre exhaust mount, so check the
exhaust system is hanging properly.
