Hi,

I'm looking at a '64 Mini Minor and was wondering if it was at all possible
to install an air conditioning unit? Sorry, I know it's not original
equipment but essential in Australia!

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, should be possible, if you can find somewhere to fit the
compressor - that is going to be your biggest problem. Go speak to an
airco specialist, they should be able to suggest a way of doing it, and
with what parts to use. then you can make the choice of letting them do
it, or buy the parts and do it yourself.

Where were you thinking of putting it? In the boot?

You *might* find an under dash evaporator unit like they used to fit to
Holdens and Fords in the early 1970s, but you'll have a hard time
finding a compressor small enough or a space big enough, and there is
nowhere realistic for a condensor.

Some very late injected Minis as delivered to Japan have aircon. If
you're in Melbourne, go around to Northern Mini, they have a ute with a
front cut from a japanese delivery Minimatic with air. Open the bonnet.
Think about what is involved in working on it.

Buy a moke.

Sorry, I have a stupid question - were all UK locally sold Minis without
air-con ? I am in Hong Kong and all Minis sold here were with air-con. For
MT models the "raw " cars from UK were without air-con, but the dealer here
ordered an air-con kit from Japan Rover and then installed it into the Mini.
For AT models the air-cons were factory fitted in UK. Yes the air-con makes
the engine room very crowded but it is a must for Asian countries. The
evaporator is installed right next to the VIN plate.

By the way, if I remember correctly, John Cooper Garage is also selling
air-con kit for Minis, so mail order one from them might be a solution.

I'm in Australia, not the UK, but Minis were definitely never sold with
aircon in Australia. Bear in mind that production ended here in 1978, at
which time modern small compact compressors etc probably weren't yet
available.

> I am in Hong Kong and all Minis sold here were with air-con.

Any idea when they started fitting aitcon there (or when they started
selling Minis if they always had air?)

I wonder who developed the aircon kit used in Japan.
For example, the Opel Corsa in Europe was only available with aircon in
left hand drive. When Holden started selling RHD Corsas as Barinas in
Australia, Ait International in Melbourne, Australia, developed an
aircon kit for Holden.

> The evaporator is installed right next to the VIN plate.

The VIN plate has probably moved a few times over the years. The one
example I have seen had a small boxy condenser over the top of the
torque converter housing, about where the brake booster went on some
CooperS cars.

It's unlikely to fit a 1964 Mini!

I believe very late UK models were available with air con as an option.
But not sure about an early 850....... when you switch on the pump the
engine might stall..... may not have enough power to drive it!

My first leyland mini about a 76 model had aircon fitted.Well most of it
anyway- looks like alot of effort had gone into something that never was
going to work. There was  electrical wiring, some piping, switches added to
the dash, an underdash unit right under the passengers knees   but no
compressor.Had shoved a small condenser right against a badly modified
grill.Maybe they couldnt fit a compressor and gave up.Ended up removing most
of it. I cant see that the worn 1100 motor could have provided much power to
run a good cold stream of air.Wish i had photos of it for you.

Almost all the Minis here in Malaysia have air-conditioning. It's not a
problem to install one, even in a short-nose Mini. The most common layout is
: the compressor above the alternator and the condensor (evaporator) beside
the radiator. The Minis sold in Japan have specially made mini-evaporators
and mini-cooing fans that fits nicely just above the grille.

I am in Oz & have an Ex Japan mini with A/C works quite well exept
when the weather is over 40deg outside the engine overheats but then
our 93 Rodeo does the same thing. I guess its a hard ask in those
conditions.
Steven Clarke - 21 Feb 2004 11:54 GMT
Do you have the make and model and or part numbers so I can chase up the
details, I am in sunny cairns where ac would be nice, and I have plenty of
power to spare in the van!

I recon your best bet is to Chase up one of the wrecker who bring in
half cuts Ex Japan tell them you just want a stuffed japanese mini
front cut (cotains all the important bits. As another poster said they
all had A/C over there. Gasopts cars in Brisie have a cople of whole
cars with A/C 88 mod. He had a black one wich might be cheap. You
could Ring Glen Carpenter from Glens Mini Mart in Brisie he would
know. I doubt it will be a cheap exersise any way you go.

Do you have a number? The only guys I know of in Brissie are Mini Pro.
Currently working on a 72 Clubman :)

btw if anyone has of or knows of a place to obtain a Gregory's type manual
or even the owners handbook that would be super. We got the car from an ex
mini distributor.

In Australia you're better off getting the Leyland Australia workshop
manual than any of the aftermarket manuals such as Gregory's or Haines'.

In Melbourne there is a guy who does nothing but import and distribute
workshop and owners manuals. Doubtless there is someone similar in
Brisbane, try asking at your local Repco/AutoBahn/etc.

I agree with the comment about Leyland Australia workshop manuals as
they are superb.

Try Mountain Motor Books in Brisbane (ph 07 3397 6845). He specialises
in new and used workshop manuals, car and bike books, and automotive
literature.
