A Couple of problems

Hi all,
Having recently just passed my test (4th time lucky :-s) I decided to get
the beast on the road. The only problem is that the MOT decided to take that
moment to expire. Ah well.
Anyway I do have a couple of small problems on the car at the moment that
prahaps someone can help me with.
Firstly on the drivers side door seam at the bottom there is a thumb sized
rust hole there, someone told me that this would not pass the MOT and that I
should get it patched up. If I just clean this up and slap some anti-rust
stuff over the area will this be a problem. Secondly due to a problem on my
part, I had to change the locks in the car (including the petrol cap) when i
managed to get the old cap out... part of it broke up and went into the
tank, it was not small enough to go into any of the pipes but the indicator
guage is not working at the moment..... how hard is it to get the tank out
to turn it upside down to get rid of the problem. Thirdly, 2nd gear dosn't
like staying in and when it goes in it goes with a bit of a crunch, going
round Hyde Park Corner and then realising that the gear you was just in is
no longer the case is not funny, any idea of what could be the case?

Thanks in advance people

Well done!

If it on the door itself, you should be OK, but a quick dose of fibreglass
filler will make a temporary repair that the MOT tester cannot fail.
If it is on the door step, it should fail because it is structural. This
will need welding.

You can take the sender unit out and see if the offending part just drops to
the bottom of the tank. It may never be a problem if it is too large to
enter the pipe. Otherwise you will need to drain the tank (long job if there
is a al ot of fuel in it!). There is simply a strap over the tank with one
bolt. That is all that holds it in.

Either the synchro ring is worn (causing the crunch) or the selector fork is
worn (causing it to jump out of gear). Or both!
Any problem like this will require the gearbox out of the car to fix.

Well I took it to have the welding done today and also to have an MOT, when
they guy first looked at it, he said that the engine was on the move, so the
engine stabilisers needed rewelding, and a couple of odds and ends which
ended up costing me 140 quid with the MOT. After the MOT I go back and he
tells me that the engine is pumping out 4 times the normal amount of CO2 and
also some of the suspension bits are warn, which is another 100 quid. :-(
Damn!

Which should have stopped it jumping out of gear - if that was what was
causing it.

Could it also be worn runners in the steady bar pulling it out when the
engine rocks?
