Just wondering if someone can help me get to the bottom of the noises
coming from the engine of my '87 city E.
For the past few months, the clutch has been somewhat noisey when
engaged (foot off the pedal) and sounds somewhat like a diesel engine.
I'm not sure if this is related to the current problem, but I was told
that the noises were "nothing to worry about" (please feel free to
tell me otherwise).
The thing I'm getting now is an unusual vibration from the engine. You
don't so much hear at as "feel" it. It occours most noticeably at high
engine revs (approaching 40000 rpm), but also slightly when the engine
is labouring (going up a hill, or changing up gears early).
It's definately not wheel-bearing or tyre related, but I'm thinking
either valve clearances (these are way over-due for a check), or
related to this clutch problem (release bearing).
On the subject of the clutch, I had a new clutch plate in a couple of
years ago by a local garage. Should he of replaced the attached
bearings and what-not? Is this normal practice?
Thanks,
Dan

If it sounds loud when you take your foot off the clutch, then it's
generally down to worn idler gear.

I think most cars would get an "unusual vibration" at 40,000 rpm!!!!

Has the guts broken out of the input gear?
You don't have to pull the engine to check most of the stuff inside the
clutch housing.

I would agree with Taffy and say Idle gear,
Try increasing the idle speed,
if the noise diminishes, then its definitely the idle gear
