I am trying to replace the inner CV/Diff oil seal to stop a major oil
dribble on my 1991 Mini.
I have split the wheel hub, then tried to lever/chizel between the Diff end
cap and the inner CV to get it to come
apart, past the circlip.

However, despite lots of welly, many hours later, and with one rather
buggered end cap, it still refuses to move.

Can anyone advise of the solution (PS I dont have the real 18G1240 tool, as
per the Haynes manual)
If this is essential for success, where would I get one?

(I live in Manchester)....

I have just the right shape long tyre lever that I use, pivoting on one
of the 5/16 UNC bolts that hold the end cover on.  It's still a real
pain though.

The right sized taper cold chisel can also work, but you stand too high
a chance of damaging the cover.

I have never had the problem, although I have replaced dozens of oil seals
in the past,
I find that the right amount of pressure applied equally to either side of
the pot joint always works for me,
too much pressure on one side tends to jam it,

This is exactly how I removed mine a couple days ago.  I put a long crowbar
in from the top, removing the hood so I had enough room to whack it hard
with a rubber mallet.

Then I got underneath and, from the other side used a pry bar, knocking it
with the mallet - and lo, the gap opened up and off came the pot joint.

Found the little metal ring that's supposed to go onto the pot joint's shaft
is No Longer Available (at least here in the USA from Mini Mania), but they
said it should be OK without it as long as I replace the rubber seal.
Haven't done that yet, but hopefully that will stop the leak there.
