I'm still stuck in the process of replacing the front discs on my 1991
mayfair. there doesn't seem to be any way to remove the hub flange from the
driveshaft. I got an answer from  steve in my last post telling me to tap
the end of the driveshaft with a hammer to free the taper split washer. I
hammered away and it didn't work.
any other suggestion?

cheers

What have you removed so far?

With the big nut removed, then the driveshaft should be free to move a
little in the hub.  If not, then either the taper split washer is stuck,
which I've never seen, or the spacer collar from between the two
bearings is damaged and stuck to the drive shaft.

If you put the big nut back on the thread (to protect the thread), then
the big hammer technique should solve things.

Once the drive shaft is seen to be free to move, then you can spit the
taper on the top and bottom ball joints (and the steering rod as well)
and remove the hub, leaving the driveshaft attached in the car.

It is possible for the drive shaft to get stuck in the swivel hub,
most likely on the bearing spacer. Try using a puller tool to remove
the drive flange (hub flange?) rather than trying to drive the drive
shaft out of the drive flange.

I suspect that you will be better off splitting the ball joints and
removing the entire drive shaft swivel hub assembly. In cases where
I've seen the drive shaft stuck on the spacer several thorough
cleanings have let the drive shaft fall off the hub. I think a small
line of grease hardens next to the bearing spacer and jams it to the
drive shaft.

Please tell us what you have removed so far. It's hard to advise
without the whole picture.

Cheers,

Kelley

I had the problem of somewhat mashed splines in the flange .. it took
a large puller with a lot of tension and gentle persuasion with a lump
hammer (this was on a Metro though) the taper washer should have a
split in it ..
(as seen in nr 13 on image:

clean it and see if you can wriggle it loose with a screwdriver ?
