Oil Leaks

There's always a fresh puddle of oil underneath my sisters Mini Open Classic
these days, I can't tell whether it's coming from the selector rod seal or
the drive shaft seals as there's a fair amount of oil sprayed around the
underneath of the engine.

Any suggestions on a quick fix?

Use a high-pressure washer to clean the underside, drive it for 10-15
minutes, and see where the oil comes from. Then decide what needs fixing ;)

If its the selector dont remove the old seal just bang in the new one on
top of the old one, it will last longer.

New revelations today, well I was about to give the Mini a bit of a service
and removed the rocker cover gasket to get at the tappets and surprise,
surprise there was thick lumps of yellow goo stuck to the inside of the
rocker cover.

So now we're talking head gasket failure and maybe water in the oil will
explain why there's been oil leaking.  Mind you I can't understand why the
head gasket should have failed as the car is looked after and regularly
serviced.

Oh well these things happen I guess but a local garage has quoted ?210.00
plus VAT to fix it, ouch!

Cheers,

Taffy

This goo is sometimes just condensation. It can appear without the head
gasket failure you refer to. Is there goo in the oil on the dip stick too?
If not, I would suspect it is just condensation. When was the filler cap
last changed? If this is blocked it might accentuate the problem.

Also, try running a compression check before you dive into a gasket swap.

Or alternately, a fiver for the gasket, and about 45 minutes with  9/16 and
1/2" sockets and spanners :)

Good news it turned out not to be the head gasket, but one of the crankcase
breather pipes was disconnected and left hanging down the side of the
engine.   I suspect this was done by a local garage which I now keep clear
of.  So the hose is now reconnected and the car seems fine again.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
