I fitted an eyebrow panel a few years ago into my van.

It was a basic design using the ridge that the headlining fits into anyway.
I used a few pieces of 1"x1" pine to brace it and fitted hardboard to it
with panel pins.  You can then cover it with whatever you want.  I used
carpet but you can easily get hold of the acoustic felt that looks rather
nice from most motorfactors.

In the van it was easy to run wires down the pillars behind the driver but I
don't know in a saloon.  I have seen friends in the past who had eyebrow
panels fitted in saloons so there must be somewhere to run the wires out of
site.

I only fitted a radio because shortly after my wife became one with the
central reservation of the A1 ;)  It is easy enough to stuff one of the
stick on screen aerials inside the panel with good reception too.  You could
stick these into it also and run whatever you want off it

If you find somewhere to run your wires you may be wise to wire them in even
before you add things and then the wiring is there to do it later.

It is all coming back to me now, those days before I decided to go the
classic route ;)

The wife spun, crashed into the central reservation through overtaking
traffic, bounced off and spun back through the two lanes landing on the
grass verge.  I know it is only one case but...

You aren't talking about something that close to the driver (a radio can't
be more than 20 cms front to back so 25 cm out from the windscreen.  Plus it
is up out of the way.  It also isn't that sturdy a construction, and will be
covered so in the unlikely event that you do hit it rather than the
windscreen you will do more damage to it than yourself.

Keep in mind that in an accident, there is a very good chance you will
hit the radio with your head.

Provided it is properly padded, this should not be a problem.

If you do not protect the sharp and hard edges of the radio properly, it
is very likely that in a serious accident you will be seriously hurt.

Depending on local law you may actually be required to pad anything like
this inside the car which you might hit.

It was a regular DIY conversion back in the 60s & 70s ,,
it was almost always constructed from ply wood  because it was easy to cut
to shape, then covered in whatever material you could find,
We often fitted additional switches or the additional interior light and
don't forget the Cassette player,
this was back in the dark ages, when a Radio and a Cassette player where
separate units,
