Creak...

I've got a really annoying creak on my '98 Cooper Sport. It's somewhere
on the front suspension at the driver's side.

It doesn't start until the car has been driven a few miles, and how soon
it starts seems to vary according to how long the car has been stood. So
if I drive it everyday, the creak will start after a few miles, but if
it has been stood for a week, then I might go 30 miles before it starts.
Once it starts, it gives a creak with every slight suspension movement.

It seems to be as loud inside the car as outside - not terrifically
loud, but audible above the radio at normal volume. From inside the car
it seems to come from somewhere above my feet under the dash. From
outside it's really hard to tell where it's coming from, but if I push
the suspension down with my hands on the big subframe turret bolt, I can
feel it.

It's only a few months since I replaced the cones and repacked the
knuckles, so I'm fairly confident that the problem is not with those.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what it could be?

Worn dampers?  How about the disc brake backing plates, are these in good
shape?  i.e. not broken/loose?

The car has only done 11k miles, apart from some rubber bits that have
failed - cones and stabilizer bar bushes - it's like new.

Sounds like the top suspension arms to me. load the nipples on the top
arms until grease comes out of the rubber seal at each end. If that
doesn't do it remove the cone and feel for play or stiffness in the top
arm, try grease when it is not loaded by the cone and move it up and
down while you grease it.

get your subframes checked, sounds like the same issue I had with my 2000
Cooper Sport, which turned out to be a cracked weld on the top turret of the
subframe.
fortunatly mine was diagnosed soon after I bought it, so it was fixed under
warranty. I have also heard of this same problem affecting a couple of other
late model Minis

That's interesting (but worrying!) Is it visible without removing the
subframe? Was yours repaired, or did it mean a new subframe?

This seems to be quite a problem with later models.  A mate of mine has an
Equinox that had a problem with the front subframe cracking causing a creak
from the front.  It eventually turned into a knock from the front as it got
worse...

And check the front mounts between the frame and front panel. They can fail
quite quickly.
