Hello there,
I've been reading alot of mini mag and looking at what people install into
their mini.
I've got an interest in installing a tachometer on a mini. But I've no idea
how to install it. Like where to get the information for the rev counters
and things I should be aware of? is it mechanical/electrical?

Many Thanks,
   Yako^^

It's an 1982 mini. I actually have no idea what model it is, except it is a
morris make. Though I would like to find out.. but I've given up.
It's also had an engine changed to a 1275cc A+ block.

1982 and a Morris?
Not likely - I was under the impression that most mini's 80's onwards were
Leylands or Austins.. or Rovers..
1982 would be A+ already, unless it had a 1000cc A+?

It shouldn't be impossible to wire up a tacho - depending on how savvy you
are with wire and crimp terminals and all that sorta thing - if you buy a
decent tacho then you will probably get some rough installation
instructions with it - like where wires go, etc etc - usefull to know so
you don't fry it.

If you really don't know what you're doing and don't mind spending the $ -
you might consider taking it to an autoelectrician and seeing what they'd
charge to install it ...

Just thinking out loud again...

What does leyland mini look like..? I think it might be a leyland.
as far as I know.. it's a badge with black background, with blue forground.
that sorta resembles a w.. It's sorta diagonal at 30 degrees..
my internet is currently to slow for me to search the web.. so I'll find out
later..
It's registered as morris Mini for some reason.  I never was able to find
out what model is my mini... except that it's was a 1982 1000cc with no disc
brakes. The first owner changed the engine to 1275cc, which I actually was
able to track down.

Are there much different in Mini mayfair, LE, city etc etc in the 1980s?

So I'm slowly (extremely slow actually) learning about my mini that I intend
to fully restore it. But yeah.. I should know more about my own car.. LOL...

Back to the tacho, I'd like to install it myself personally, since I'm
taking it as a hobby to recondition my car and learning about my MINI :)
But if I really get stuck.. I guess I got no choice but to get an mini
specialist to do it instead.

Do you mean tachometer as in rev counter? If so, it's a DODDLE to install.
Two wires. One from the coil (can't remember if its the +ve or -ve side, but
I could find out fairly quickly from the Haynes manual), one to +12v feed
(ideally one that comes on with the ignition i.e. when you turn the key to
the 2nd position). That's all there is to it. My 1989 Mini had a 2-dial dash
with no rev counter, but already had the wiring for it in place. Worth
checking if your 1982 does too.

Good luck with the Taco - nice and spicy.

If I were you I would invest in some disc brakes.  As you don't know much
about maintenance, once you have discs you don't have to keep faffing about
with them.  Drums need to be kept adjusted correctly or you will find
yourself in a hedge :(

Welcome to the group BTW

Most of these have the wiring built into the harness which you can
pickup behind the dash. They brought out some editions of the mini with
tachos hence have a common harness.

I would have a look at the wiring diagram and see if there is wires
there in provisioning for a tacho.

You basically need a pulse off the distributor/coil and a pos/neg to
power it up.
