distributor problems

I have just put an mg metro engine into a miin that already had electronic
ignition fitted(metro type), i didn't time the two engines up together, and
now i am really struggling to figure out the dizzy. If i rotate the engine
around until compression starts to build in no. 1 cylinder, the rotor arm is
heading towards number four plug lead, if i take the dizzy out and rotate
the shaft through 180 degrees, it won't fit back into the block, what is
going on???????

Hi,
Put the dizzy back as you had it then swap the leads across the dizzy cap.
this should put things right.

The A series motor has a gear on the camshaft which drives another gear
on a short shaft underneath the distributor. At the top of that shaft is
the keyway which drives the distributor.

The gear on the shaft has 9 teeth. It is easily removed by removing the
distributor and then screwing a long 5/16UNF bolt into the end of the
shaft and lifting it out.

If it is put back in one of the 8 possible wrong positions (as opposed
to the 1 correct position, total 9 teeth) then when the points open as
#1 approaches top dead centre, the distributor rotor arm will be
pointing in a different direction.

Many people fix this problem by rearranging the distributor leads
instead of putting the shaft back in right, with the result that there
is no single "right" arrangement of the leads on an A series distributor
cap. Well, there is THE right way, but there are many wrong ways which
have been made to work.

You can pull the shaft out of your motor and put it back in in the
corret position to suit your distributor cap, or you can rearrange the
leads.
