Hey guys

I have a '86 mini mayfair auto, and am a total novice.

Recently changed the head gasket (as there was water in the oil), now she starts fine when cold but seems to idle a bit eraticaly and if stalls after running for a bit just will not start... this is not good at junctions etc...

any ideas would be really appreciated

First of all, what has changed since it was running OK?

Obviously you've had the entire head off, so valve clearances are one
obvious possibility. You *did* check the valve clearances when you
fitted the new gasket didn't you?

Other than that, you've had the carby and manifold off the car too, so
consider if you may have interfered with them in some way?

Last summer mine (1992) also wouldn't like to start when the engine was hot.
Turned out that the carb float had a hole in it and it was almost full of
fuel. It would float when the gas in the carb was cool but would not when
the gas was warm. Check to see if you are spitting fuel out throught the
overflow- if so, it could be a bad float.
