it is a '77 clubman with the switch on the column.

Whatever, replace the whole switch, you might be able to retain the key
barrel, but Im not sure.

If the ignition switch is short, and you have to stall the car to stop it,
becareful because the ignition coil will still be powered and could burn
out.
Might be worth disconnecting the battery or at least the coil until you sort
it.

Also check for a meltdown inside of the fusebox,
I have known this to cause the same fault

well, the car died on me while driving last night, and i had to call
the nrma (aussie AA people) to tow me off the main road.
turns out that there was a short from the coil to the body.
a DPE had decided to run a cable throught the firewall from the brake
pedal switch to the coil to get power. the insulation had worn away
and i was shorting the ignition circuit.
so my ignition switch works now.
i think it may be the time for some serious rewiring.
