I have just spent the week swaping bits on my engine. put it back in the car
and the bugger wont start. Joy! i have gone over everything and it all looks
fine. But i have noticed the coil gets extremly hot? any ideas. also timing
wise you do count anticlockwise for the leads? i am starting to doubt
myself. any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

It's playing with you, like a cat with a mouse.....
> But i have noticed the coil gets extremly hot?
Ahhh, a clue!
This means that it is definitely getting power to the coil. However, if
the motor is not running and it stops with the points closed, it may not
mean anything special...
> any ideas. also timing wise
On the other hand, if you've been playing with the distributor, it is
VERY easy to fit the point wrong so that even when they open, they
remain electrically closed.
Pull off the distributor cap and turn the ignition on. With an insulated
handle screwdriver (careful not to rest your finger tip on the steel
shaft) push the points open and see if there is a small spark. If
they're already open, short them together with the tip of the
screwdriver, then remove it. Once again, look for the small spark.
If there's no spark, odds are you've got the insulators in the wrong
order under the points.
> you do count anticlockwise for the leads?
The rotor button rotates anticlockwise.
Because it is possible to fit the dsitributor drive shaft in any of 8
wrong positions as well as one right one, it is entirely possible that
any of the four cylinders corresponds to the top lead, but the order,
anticlockwise, should be 1, 3, 4, 2, 1, 3, 4 .....
> i am starting to doubt myself.
If no one else has had any opportunity to interfere, then thats a good
place to start. 8-) Remember that there aren't any people who "don't
make mistakes", just people who "don't make as many mistakes any more".
any help would be appreciated.

the plugs so i am now disconting the electrics. there is plenty of fuel in
the bowl, only thing i cant test is compression, i have swaped heads and
carbs, new head gasket so i am totally at a loss as to why it is not doing
anything.

Is the spark occuring at the right time?
i.e. at the leads on the dizzy in the wrong place like 90/180/270 degrees
out?
Rotate them all around a place on the dizzy cap and see what happens.
