Does anyone out there know the Fram number that will fit a 998 motor?
Thanks.

Fram is arguably the worst made major brand oil filter on the market.
Minis need as good a filter as you can get. I usually use Wix 51342 .
It's about half-again as large as the comparable Fram. When I can't
get the Wix I use a Volvo filter for a 240 DL. All 4-cylinder Volvos
used the same oil filters from about 1962-1998 except possibly for the
diesels.

If you have to have a Fram cross reference it to an Austin America or
a late MG Midget.

Cheers,

Kelley

I second that - the same # Wix filter is what I use on my 1275cc engine.  I
agree, DON'T buy Fram, they are junk - I have found this to be general
opinion from Web searches when I got my Mini and had the same question as
you.

Take a look at http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfilterstudy/oilfilters.html
for reviews.  I know there are others on the web too...

That's interesting. We have been selling Fram for some of our filter range
for a couple of years with no negative feedback at all. Recently we have
changed to Coopers purely based on getting a better price. But it is all
useful info.

The filters pictured are visually different to the ones we used to sell. Is
the name Fram a different company in the US to the European company? I was
under the impression that the ones we had were manufactured in Italy.

We may not be talking about the same company, though I've never heard of
another Fram.  See the following articles:

http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilter-fram1.txt (referenced from
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html)

http://www.shoclub.com/lubrication-oil/lubrication-oilpart5.htm

http://www.twocreeks.net/toby/oil_filters/fram.shtml

http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/downs/3837/oilfilst.html

These all have things to say about Fram, but the last link above may be the
most succinct:
"Years ago Fram was a quality filter manufacturer. Now their standard filter
(the radioactive-orange cans) is one of the worst out there. These filters
are manufactured by Allied Signal, Inc. Please do not buy this filter. By
boycotting it, we may be able to cause some change. I have personally had
one if these filters fail and actually cause engine damage due to bits of
paper and glue floating around in the engine. This filter cartridge has a
small outside diameter with a rather low filter element surface area (193 sq
in), and features cardboard end caps that are glued in place. The rubber
anti-drainback valve seals against the cardboard and easily leaks, causing
dirty oil to drain back into the pan. If you have a noisy valve train at
startup, this filter is likely the cause. The bypass valves are plastic and
are sometimes not molded correctly, which allows them to leak all the time,
but they often leak anyway. The backplate has smaller and fewer oil inlet
holes, which may restrict flow, and is made of thin material."

Thanks for the info.  I will keep clear of Fram.  Mainly, I was after a
number that I could use as a cross reference.
