Oil Leak Woes

Just recently had the gear selector rod seal replaced on my sisters 93' Open
Classic LE, but there's still a small puddle of oil underneath the car after
it's been parked up overnight.  Ok it's not quite so bad, but it's still
leaking from somewhere, any ideas?

Cheers,

Taffy

He's already said he's replaced it.

Just the usual, climb underneath and look for the source.

It's (apparently) very easy to butcher the selector seal when fitting it.

I say apparently since I've never had to do one.

I have the same problem, think my leak is from the drive shaft oil
seals...... could that be a possibility ???

Could be the drive shaft seals.  These can be spotted by the drip of oil
clinging on to the pot-joint outer when parked.

I have oil coming out of the flywheel housing (from the hole with the
'jiggle pin' in.)  I guess this is getting past the main crankshaft
seal, so it looks like a major job to cure this.

Me too.  :-(

Don't suppose there is any other possible reason why oil could drip from
there? (Just grasping at straws...)

It does sound like the rear main oil seal is leaking,
so its remove the clutch and replace the seal, and maybe replace the clutch
while your in there,

Hey Taff,
why not knock another seal over the first one,
I think you can get 4 seals on the shaft,

Do you have the nylon spacer ring in there?  (Fitted before the oil-seal
goes in) This takes the side-to-side loading and ensures that the seal
has an easy life.  (I think early rod-change boxes used a metal spacer
with an O-ring, but the nylon ones seem to fit them all.

The nylon bush was used in some cars (mainly Metros) from the factory.

The aluminium bush is an upgrade to all earlier rod change boxes. Later
gearbox casings were modified to have a longer bearing engagement for the
selector rod, so you don't need the bush. I think the modification started
production in the early 90's, but not sure exactly when. So the '92 car may
be either type. Sorry I can't be more specific, Taffy.

What's strange is it only leaks when parked with the passenger side near the
camber of the kerb.  So I guess it must be a drive shaft seal issue?

Mmm...sounds possible. The oil level is probably just below that when the
car is level. But I would expect it to leak on the move too. This would
leave a nice line of oil up the bulkhead in line with the pot joint where it
spins it off.
