Don't know the size. When measured the bore diameter is 1&3/8

It's a 1988 MINI Mayfair, RHD, 998CC.
Has a plastic air filter assembly.

Need to know what K&N filter to buy for it. If anyone can get me the part
number, it would be greatly appreciated.
If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks a bunch everybody,

R.

If the flange that the fits the carb to the manifold has four bolt
holes, you have an 1 3/4" (H6, HS6 or HIF44? I think) if the flange has
only two fixings diagonally set you have a 1 1/2" (H4, HS4 or HIF38? I
think). In the unlikely event that the flange has two bolts one above
and one below the carb your carb is a 1 1/4" (H2, HS2).

Most likely is the 1 1/2" variety, if it has a bowl stuck on the side of
the carb it is the H or HS type, The HIF type have the 'bowl' (or float
chamber to give it the proper name) built into the bottom of the carb.

Best bet is to find the Carb ID tag (little triangular tag fixed to a
screw somewhere on the carb, usually a float chamber screw) and note the
number and enter that number into Burlen Fuel Systems search.
http://www.burlen.co.uk This will tell you all you need to know about
your carb.

Also have you considered what needle you may need in the carb once you
have fitted the K&N?

Try  http://www.winsu.co.uk/  for a needle selector.

Thanks very much,
It's my first MINI, don't know anything about them. Just brought it from
Japan in a spur of the moment and don't regret it...

It should be an HS4 unless a previous owner has changed it (unlikely).

Thanks,

It is an HS4!!!  Hasn't been changed since the car hasn't been modified at
all. It's just as it came out of the plant. No rust!!! Everything working
fine. Need to fit a new filter to pass the Ontario emission test. It's
running rich at idle.
Thanks to Drew from the previous post, will fit a needle that will run
leaner for the test.

Thank you again,

R.

Thanks for reminding me - I must get the paper air filter off my Mini out
the washing machine :)

Yeah, it's tight of me, but I'm working to MOT on a budget here!

If you fit a K&N, you'll be wanting a richer needle, not leaner. To get the
car through the emissions test, try winding the nut on the jet up a little -
Not too much, or you'll run way too lean, get a misfire, and that will shoot
the HC level up massively. Don't know if that's on the Canadian test, but I
imagine it is.

IMO K&N filters on Minis are shiny noisy and not very useful unless they're
the replacement element types, as the carb sits right over the exhaust and
will simply pull hot air into the engine if there's no cold air ducting
added. The replacement element types that go inside the standard air box are
pretty good though, although then you've got the restriction of the air box
to sort out.

If you're after simply getting the car working, and aren't aiming for power,
get another paper element, or bang yours through a 60 wash in the machine
(if married, don't let the wife catch you!). Once it's all road legal, start
looking at stage one kits if you want more power.

All IMO, as no doubt there's plenty of people who'd disagree with every word
I've just said! :)

Its probably a SU HS4 you have fitted, the SU HIF was fitted later, you
probably need K&N filter no KNN 569320 or you could fit a K&N element,  no
KNN E2601 inside your existing plastic air filter housing,

Steve.

Big thanks to everyone who replied. I know what carb I got and more!!!

As I said earlier, it's my first MINI and it's been a blast just hanging
around people so passionate about them.

Thanks again,

Rodion in Ottawa.
