Hi all,

My 82 Mini city failed its WOF because of knackered front wheel
bearings, so I stripped the hubs off it to replace them.  In the
process, I saw that the brake pads on the left front were perished,
with cracks that ran full width of the pad, and the right hand pads
were the same but worse, they actually had chunks of pad material
missing.

The biggest chunk that was missing ( @ the size of 2 thumbnails ) was
from the leading edge of the pad.

I've only had the car a year, and these pads came with, so I don't
know their history, and obviously they'll all be getting replaced, but
does anyone have any ideas as to why they look like this.  ( Are drum
brakes mean't to look like this? )

cheers

Excessive heat is one of the main causes of brake pad or shoe material
breaking up, another is poor quality material,

Drum brakes (with shoes) or disk brakes (with pads)?

Not sure about the friction material failures, but obviously replace
them and keep an eye on them for a while. If they're front drums you'll
be adjusting them every few weeks anyway, so you'll have ample
opportunity to inspect them regularly.

Is it actually missing????? Does the metal underneath it have glue on it to
fix the friction material???

Drum Brake pads don't have friction material over the entire length of the
metal. One end has about 2cm (1 inch)  'missing' (as in, not fitted in the
factory). That is original.
But obviously cracks are not and replacement is cheap.......
