I have just bought a 1989 1275 auto metro to transfer the engine to my 1990
998cc. I have been told that my original gear box will not sync with the
engine . Is this correct or will I have to get a new box if so what type
would be best for the job ?

thanks in advance

The only gearbox that will work on the auto engine is the auto gearbox. The
oil ways are different to the manual one. You need an engine from a manual
Metro if you want 1275cc.  That would work with your existing manual gearbox
if needed.

thro away the metro auto box and engine and keep looking! There are loads of
manual 1275 engines out there still! see if you can get a late MG or VP
engine, they i beleieve are nearly 90bhp, as opposed to the normal 60bhp for
std 1275 city types.

Have a look for the dipstick on the 1275 auto engine...

As others have pointed out, auto motors only fit auto boxes, manual
motors only fit manual boxes.

Either buy a manual motor or buy an auto front subframe and convert.
