Hi all

Just had someone on the phone who wants to sell his Moke. It is an early
British built car. He says it was registered 01/06/63, but I thought
production didn't start until 1964! So it is very early on that basis! It is
not on the road, but is said to be in sound condition..... eminently
restorable!!! Beyond that, I know nothing so don't bother asking me
questions :-)

Car is located in Norwich, Norfolk, England.

Your right about the production start date (1964) so it could be a prototype
(nice thought but unlikely).
Most likely is not a Moke at all but a kit that has taken on the identity of
an early Mini (a very common occurrence!)

I haven't seen it so I can't add much more info. It has an 'A' registration
which could have been applied as an 'unknown year of manufacture'. But the
document states 01/06/63 apparently.
Your second suggestion would still require the original Moke to have been
registered in 63 though, wouldn't it? The plot thickens!
I would have liked to take a look at the car, but it would be wasting the
guys time since I have no intentions of buying. And that would be unfair.
The pre-production idea crossed my mind too, but as you say, a bit unlikely.

Some years ago, my colleague looked at an unregistered Moke that had been
used on an estate since the 60's. Didn't buy that one either!

Went in HMV this morning, saw a CD for the spencer davies group with a moke
on the front cover, swear it was an A reg 63 ish.
Many early mokes made it into the army and navy and could have been
regsitered in odd ways so it could be genuine.

Hi Steve,
I was suggesting it could of been a scrapped Mini not a Moke. I have seen
this a few times before, the owner calls it a Moke but it's a pre-production
date and the log book says "Mini Saloon". They frequently turn out to be a
kit using a Mini donor but saying that I also know of a genuine Prototype
that is registered as a Mini. It all depends on who was typing in the
details at DVLC at the time (My two Mokes didn't mention Moke at all on the
reg doc)
The only way of knowing is see the car in the flesh but I've just blown my
cash on a Mk2 Traveller and, as you say, it would be unfair to waste the
guys time just looking out of curiosity.
Cheers,
Dean.
