A handful of stickers, front bumper, possibly the seats and a rol bar
are all that distinguish a 1975 standard Moke from an early 998
Californian. As long as it's not a 1977, I don't think it really matters
much to anyone if it was labelled "Californian" when it left the factory.

To be honest, it's now 8 years since I broke my moke up for parts, so
I'm a little out of touch with prices, but $5k seems an awful lot.

If memory serves isn't it currently 3AusD to 1UKP. ?2000 for a good
condition moke? It would be worth importing it over here :D
I have a mate who spent 3000 on a UK moke rotbox because he wanted it. Then
he has to do it up!!
Admittedly, it does have the rarity factor - ie no roll bar or seatbelt
mounting points.

10 years ago I looked at buying local Mokes and stripping out the front
brakes, motor and box and shipping the rest to the UK. With 1275 motors
and boxes and disk brakes worth more here than in the UK it didn't make
sense to be shipping those parts, but the rest of the car wasn't worth
much at all here.
