Is this the 1972 1275cc Moke Special Export with drum front brakes,
commonly called a Californian and sometimes fitted with either a lurid
orange floral or black and white patterned hood and seats?

Or is it the Moke Californian manufactured from 1978 onwards? 1275cc
with disks or 998cc with drums?

Or is it just a 1975 Moke with some bits off a later Californian?
(not that later 998cc Californians were anything much special)

$5500 seems rather optomistic to me?

Nice to find out.

They use quite a few up there to rent etc.

As far as I'm aware (according to what the guy who sold it to me said and
the rego papers) it's a Moke Californian 1975.
It's bright yellow in color.

It's the 998cc with drums.

I paid $5000 for it 6 months ago and have spent in excess of $1500 on it to
replace bits such as shocks, steering arms, flushing the radiator, tyres,
servicing etc.
I'm open to negotiate if I'm way off the mark - that's what I'd hoped this
group of experts would be able to help me on!

A handful of stickers, front bumper, possibly the seats and a rol bar
are all that distinguish a 1975 standard Moke from an early 998
Californian. As long as it's not a 1977, I don't think it really matters
much to anyone if it was labelled "Californian" when it left the factory.

To be honest, it's now 8 years since I broke my moke up for parts, so
I'm a little out of touch with prices, but $5k seems an awful lot.

If memory serves isn't it currently 3AusD to 1UKP.  ?2000 for a good
condition moke?  It would be worth importing it over here :D

I have a mate who spent 3000 on a UK moke rotbox because he wanted it.  Then
he has to do it up!!

Admittedly, it does have the rarity factor - ie no roll bar or seatbelt
mounting points.

10 years ago I looked at buying local Mokes and stripping out the front
brakes, motor and box and shipping the rest to the UK. With 1275 motors
and boxes and disk brakes worth more here than in the UK it didn't make
sense to be shipping those parts, but the rest of the car wasn't worth
much at all here.
