By the time the gases reach the first bend, all the power loss has already
occurred. If I remember correctly, David Vizard established that the ideal
exhaust for the A series was about 3 feet long! There will be absolutely no
difference in performance between centre or side exit exhausts. One word of
advice, unless you are going racing with a fire breathing motor, don't buy
an exhaust bigger that 1.75" diameter. If you do, you are likely to loose
power.

If I remember correctly David Vizard established that the RC40 was the
ultimate in silenced road systems. The lower the back pressure the better.

Spot on, Dave. The RC40 was partly designed by David Vizard specifically for
the Mini. It is still, after many years, the system that all others are
measured against. If you want best performance, forget all the fancy big
bore stuff, use an RC40.

For a comprehensive view, read Calver's Corner, Exhaust section.

My not fit under the car snug either.
