Is it possible to fit a 1300 MG head to a 1991 998cc block without any major
problems?

yes as the valves will hit the piston(when at TDC) / block
the 998 block will need pockiting not to deep as not to interfear with the
rings

Hi,
There will also be the question of compression ratio as the chambers in the
1275 block are larger than the 998 .

Yes.

It's also possible to have very major problems.

Depending on the block, the head, the weather the morning each was
manufactured and how kind the gods are feeling on the day you assemble
it, the valves may or may not clear the cylinder walls. There are also
some issues about cooling passages and which head gasket to use.

If it all fits together and if the resultant compression ratio isn't
silly, it can work very well.

I built a heavily modified 998cc and used an alloy 1300 'size' head wayyyyy
back in the 1980s...

It can be done, but as has been said you need to check where/if the valves
will hit the block - I did this while building the engine using 'engineers
blue' and no head gasket, turning the engine over by hand...

As mine wasn't quite a true 1300 head I was able to just very carefully file
away the top of the block until they cleared, so its best if you can strip
the engine and clean it all after removing the metal - not recommended to do
it in situ!

The engine went very very well and the car was quicker than my brothers Mk3
Cooper S!  It had a 13.5:1 compression - but even using a Cooper S gasket it
used to blow them between the 2 middle cylinders every 20,000miles!

Have fun!!

I did I, about five years ago, to my then standard city E. Off come the head
on whent an  MG 1300, using the metro carb, manafold and down pipe. I did
machine pockets into the block to stop the MG values hitting it. The car
whent like stink.

How do I machine the pockets into the block??

Can I do this at home or have to take it to a machine shop to get this
done??

Im getting more and more interested in doing this now

hello,

just put the whole 1275 motor in, :-), or re con & mod before fitting, the
metro 1275cc A+ units can still be found very cheap, insurance wise it will
probably be similar,
