Just purchased a used 2000 Montero Sport. Put in new battery.  Before new
battery was installed and after the radio display only shows "code"?  Any
idea what's up with that. I assume it's getting power to make the display,
but does it need to be programmed in some manner to function?

Yes, the radio is looking for the security code to be re-enabled since it
completely lost power.  This is a theft deterrent.  You will need the VIN,
registration card, and a helpful dealer service department to get the code
to enter.
