98 Galant Shudders on Acceleration

Hi.  Our 98 Galant ES shudders on anything more than gentle
acceleration.  We also hear a click sometimes when this happens.  The
car is 4cyl, has an automatic transmission and A/C (however, A/C is
switched off).

I have changed the plugs, wires, and fuel filter as suggested by the
Haynes manual, no help.

Any ideas what else could be wrong with this car?

Thanks,
Bob

Can you identify where this click comes from? The MPI relay is either behind
the radio or on the RHS A pillar behind the glove box.

Unless the timing is way off, I'd guess there's fuel starvation. Any error
code from the ECU or Check Engine light on?

Does it run better if the gas cap is off? Could be a vacuum in the gas tank
because of a blocked evaporative emissions hose. Cap off will allow the pump
to work like it should.

Hi Stewart, yes, prior to changing the plugs & wires the
stumble/shudder had gotten bad enough to trip a Misfire in Cyl 2 code.
Has not returned.

Thanks,
Bob
